What We Celebrate on Labor Day
Labor Day in Detroit 1960 JFK stood in what became Kennedy
Square and affirmed the role of the Labor Movement with the proclamation;
"Those who would destroy or further limit the rights of organized labor -
those who would cripple collective bargaining or prevent organization of the
unorganized - do a disservice to the cause of democracy."
JFK equates the Labor Movement as being Patriotic and
Pro-Democracy. Now 62 years later, 98% of America's workforce will need to
renew the fight. Look at Wisconsin and what Mitt Romney's business record.
Romney's experience and overall remedy for our Economy is to erode the
collective power in order to destroy what has become a Human Right in America!
Any candidate who undermines organized Labor, Collective
Bargaining, Dismantling of the rights of organized Labor is suspect in their
motive. They are NOT Patriots or in support of ordinary citizens. Rather than
protect Wages & Benefits they advantage themselves their access to Foreign
Bank accounts!
Yet our achievements, notable as they are, must not distract us from the things we have yet to achieve. If satisfaction with the status quo had been the American way, we would still be 13 small colonies straggling along the Atlantic coast.”
I researched how to calculate the difference in the value of
the dollar over the course of several years. What I found is there is not just
one way to calculate the value of $1 in 1963 to the value today. I found five
sites and from the Federal Reserve they calculate that $1 in 1963 equates to
$7.85 today.
Therefore, in 1963 the “average factory wage” of $100 per
week computes as ($100 /40 hr) $2.50 per hour. The Federal Reserve’s
calculation based on inflation and cost of living computes that same average amount
to be $785.00 per week or $19.63 per hour. How many of you earn the equivalent
wage?
More importantly, do you believe that Mitt Romney’s plan to
rescue the American economy contains a long-range goal to restore the growth of
those times?
Do you believe Mitt Romney’s business knowledge; his philosophy
of business is one that supports democratic values and principles on which our
country is founded?
Do you believe Mitt Romney’s so-called business experience
with Bain Capital and his personal track record is one that supports a fair collective
bargaining process and one that has any
priority or in interest of all
America’s workforce to raise wages, increase benefits and to move our country FORWARD?
I think not. I believe not and I know not! History does not
support the Romney overall economic strategy.
If I were President Obama, I would remind Americans that in
spite of any or all of Mitt Romney’s economic promises his true record and
future goal is to disengage the country from the economic realities. Much of what
Romney proclaims is propaganda. He boasts of his sound business practices based
on a record with Bain Capital where the mission statement is not to protect,
create jobs. It states the purpose of the Romney Bain Capital is place profit
above everything to enrich their investors.
The true Mitt Romney conducts his election campaign with a “spin”
on the issues. He exceeds the average of any politician to customize his views
based on which audience he is to address. His campaign run by the Super-Pacs is
the same “bait and switch routine” as that of his Wall Street investment backers
that crushed the economy in 2008.
I am willing to wager on this Labor Day 2012, if Mitt Romney
is to make a statement or speech he will not mention jobs, collective
bargaining rights, the advances made in America in the same sentence. I am so
confident that just as him I will wager $10,000 in 1960 dollars against Romney’s
$10,000 in 2012 dollars. If I am correct and win the bet, Mr. Romney will surrender
$7,850,000 in 2012 dollars.
More on this topic to come.
