NOT THAT WE DIDN’T SEE IT COMING

This morning historian Jon Meacham articulated his view as to the pandemic and the (lack of) leadership on the federal level. Meacham without any hesitation puts forth a carefully crafted assessment.

“Never in the history of this country have we experienced a President who does not learn from his mistakes along the way. President Kennedy faced the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba immediately upon becoming President. Rather than placing blame on others he took full responsibility. He went forward careful to not make a similar mistake in his administration.”

This President is incapable of learning on the job. Worse, he has no interest in learning. He has proven to be compulsive and make decisions that contradict himself not only day to day but within the same briefing. His narcissism is beyond the score in the DSM-5. Trump’s tenure and tone is based upon impulse and ignorance of intelligence and science.  

Then moments later I am hearing one of the protesters who followed this President’s tweet to Liberate Michigan, Liberate Virginia and Liberate Minnesota. 

This man echoed the voice of America as Trump would have you believe.

“I am not about to be tracked. I’m not going to let them place a [micro] chip inside me to follow me. If there is a vaccine and you’re going to take it, good luck with that.”

This morning Senator John Kennedy (R) Louisiana is parroting the Trump administration this morning. I am paraphrasing his statement where he states unequivocally and without hesitation, 

“We need to open up the economy or it will be a disaster. If we continue to stay at home we only slow the pandemic. If we open up the economy, relax the stay at home orders we know there will be increasing infection and death. But, the American people understand this and willing to accept this.”

There is no way to determine if the good Senator polled his constituents but I say “good luck with that.”

Not long ago I stood in a long line at the Post Office patiently waiting to mail tax returns during a stay at home order. I was a bit agitated as I had no protection and quickly counted fifteen customers ahead of me and the queue growing behind me. Everyone was silent until one man spoke not to anyone in particular but anyone who would listen.

“I agree with the President, we need to re-open the economy.” In short order he engaged a mother and daughter in line and they began a conversation speaking her husband’s lay off and need for UCB to begin. The Trump supporter interjected, “There, there… we need to re-open the economy. I trust the President and God. This will end by Easter. A vaccine will be developed in Israel …wouldn’t that be something? I believe it will happen.”

We all know that Easter came and went without a vaccine. The churches were not filled on Easter, that day so “important to me” as Trump declared. Speaking from a podium with the presidential seal he scanned the press, “as it may be important to you.” Yes evangelicals, this is a religious man and the chosen one to protect your right to worship with your shotgun at your side.

For Donald John Trump the novel coronavirus has been all about him. The daily pandemic briefings have become his campaign rally. He saw the opportunity to grab the spotlight from Mike Pence once he realized this is all about the numbers. It is 15 infection cases that soon will become zero. It is the cruise ship that begged for 215 American tourists infected with COVID19 to offload and come ashore.

“I would prefer not to allow those aboard come ashore as our numbers will skyrocket. I prefer to keep the numbers where they are.”

Now the numbers of PPE, ventilators and testing are all subject to change, to be altered or denied. It is about which States have such low numbers they should re-open their economies. But most important for Trump the one thing he knows is about television ratings. He uses the free media time for self gratuitous self aggrandizement and humiliates his perceived enemies. The Governors left to fend for themselves and a media shell shocked in asking the most relevant questions.

Would someone please remind Donald John Trump he is now; and for all history an impeached President?
