A CALCULATED RISK -

UKRAINE MUST HAVE OUR AIRCRAFT NOW!

In the run-up to WWII, America remained on the sidelines while Great Britain was suffering devasting losses on the continent. America was no mood to get involved with WWI still etched in their minds. The Republican Party were pacifists staunchly holding their ground. President Roosevelt felt impelled to help our ally across the pond. His administration became creative and employed the Lend-Lease Program. America then began shipping military equipment and supplies in coming to the aid of Winston Churchill and citizens suffering under the London blitz. Marine merchant ships delivered arms to them when not sunk by German submarines.

Republican opposition continued to tie FDR's hands. What came next was more than remarkable, it was genius. Great Britain needed our aircraft if the isle was to survive. FDR's creativity and savvy led to a plan where US planes were transported to the Canadian border and literally "pushed across the border" where Canadians took them to Newfoundland. With one simple move Great Britain was saved and able to regain resolve.

Kiev and Ukraine are at the verge of collapse, while the West is scrambling for a solution.

Retired military strategists and former diplomats are now making appeals during appearances on CNN and MSNBC. Former Ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul is just one making an impassioned call for NATO to deliver 70 fighter aircraft directly to the Ukrainian defense.

Michal McFaul tweeted Saturday (1:15)

"Please NATO leaders, send all MIG fighter jets that we have -- 70 altogether, 27 alone in Poland -- to Ukraine right now. NOW! And once Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, and Slovakia send these planes, other NATO countries should send air reinforcements to these frontline states."

James Townsend, former Deputy Assistant to NATO made a similar call for strategists to be inventive and "creative" with the delivery of weapons from countries on the border, naming  Poland and Moldova. These are difficult passages through forests unknown to our command. But we have at our disposal the experience of a Polish resistance who used innovation and creativity to stymy Nazi  occupation. NATO must command all intelligence at hand. These will be dangerous covert, clandestine missions through forests or navigating waterways.

The map below zoom-in with a blue markup of Southwest Ukraine nearest to city of Odessa. Note the airfield just outside of Odessa and then the two red lines drawn to Moldova (NATO). All along the border with Moldova is lined with a highway and train rails. The lines are roads and the horizontal red line is a road leading directly to the airport that is no more than 50km from border to the Odessa Airfield!

Ukraine - Moldova border near Odessa and Airfield

There is a small waterway in light blue lake in view with dark green lines denoting the border. In a closer view, there are many roads inside the border resembling a large residential suburb that can support the movement of hardware including aircraft to the very border of Ukraine, then beyond on the highway (M-27).

It appears a clear path to transport supplies and to "push aircraft" over the border on that road to the airfield currently held by Ukraine forces. This could change so there is no time to lose

Once the Ukrainian airman take possession on the highway, they would be moved to the airfield by transport. Or, is it possible pilots can use M-27 as a runway to the sky with all ordinates onboard and ready to denigrate Russian aircraft?

It appears to be the calculated risk avoiding boots on the ground or fly zone certainly to trigger all out War in Europe.

Putin propagates lies to support outrageous claims and justify his 19th century military tactical "bomb into submission" philosophy.

The West can counter that basic "humanitarian relief" of food, water, medicine now include US F-35s.
