PROTESTERS STORMING MICHIGAN CAPITOL FOREBODES FUTURE CIVIL UNREST 

By now most have seen media coverage of the outrageous demonstration taking place in Lansing as part of a Trump induced "Liberate Michigan" movement. Reportedly thousands of right wing protesters made their way by caravan last Thursday in reaction to Governor Gretchen Whitmer's announced extension of the "stay at home" order.

A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION?

Many wonder how can these demonstrators enter the Capitol building openly carrying rifles and assault weapons. According to the State Police:

“You will not find a law that states it is legal to openly carry a firearm. It is legal because there is no Michigan law that prohibits it; however, Michigan law limits the premises on which a person may carry a firearm,” police have said.

Today (May 5, 2020) The Lansing State Journal reports that lawmakers are considering legislation to "ban firearms" from the building. The entrance does not even have metal detectors. 

The radical protest last week made Second Rights Amendment a larger issue than Governor Whitmer’s stay at home orders.

RADICAL RIGHT WING AND ARMED MILITIA MEMBER PROTEST STANDS OUT AS AN ORGANIZED, WELL ORCHESTRATED ATTACK ON THE RULE OF LAW

Michigan has never witnessed a demonstration where protesters came prepared with confederate flags,swastikas and armed in combat gear. These are racist and xenophobic tribal retaliations promoted by certain tweets. The armed group eventually breached Capitol security, storming inside the rotunda. The House had just adjourned but the Senate was in session. One remarked they were never as grateful for the small contingent police force as they feared for their lives.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was reported to be "secure" within her offices. What does this say about the state of the union during this crisis?

IT IS IRONIC THAT FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAY AMERICANS WITNESSED THE INFAMOUS "FOUR DEAD IN OHIO"

The horror of that day is the senseless shooting of several students by none other than the Ohio National Guard. This was a well organized and publicized in advance. 

We thought we learned from that deadly error by a lack of judgment. Soon after when any organized protest took place police have been armed with rubber bullets at worst and water cannons.

We have witnessed hundreds of demonstrations over decades since the Kent State anti-Vietnam War protest, And this occurred on the grassy knolls of a college campus and not the state capitol,

On several occasions we have witnessed millions gather to demonstrate for the Me Too Movement and March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C. These protests were organized with security in mind and the participants demonstrated in remarkable peaceful behavior.

Presently, the division in this country surpasses the sixties and the threat of violence exists within small but vocal minorities. Due to the contradictory and confusing messages delivered by a failing President the upcoming election combined with the tinder of COVID19 crisis may spark the fire.
